WHAT IS DENGUE FEVER?

Dengue fever is a viral disease spread by the bite of Aedes aegypti mosquito that has been infected.

There are four (4) types of viruses that cause dengue (DEN 1, DEN 2, DEN 3 and DEN 4).

Infection with one type of virus will provide immunity against the virus type only that, if people live in dengue infection, they can infect more than once in a lifetime.

More than 100 countries in South Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa, America, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Western Pacific are experiencing dengue problem.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF DENGUE FEVER?

  • Dengue fever may occur on day three (3) up to fourteen (14) days after the bite of an infected mosquito, commonly within 4 to 7 days.
  • It usually starts with a sudden high fever, severe headache / strong, pain behind the eyes, and muscle and joint pain. A red rash on the skin can also occur.
  • The fever can reach a temperature of 40-41 C, and usually continues for 2 to 7 days. It can also cause seizures in children under the age of 6 years. Severe pain in bones, muscles and joints. Dengue fever is also known as "breakbone fever".
  • The rash usually appears on days 3 and 4 after the onset of fever.
  • Vomiting and loss of appetite.

TREATMENT OF DENGUE FEVER

  • Please consult your doctor because there is no specific medication to treat dengue fever.
  • Rest and drink plenty of fluids. Paracetamol can be taken to reduce fever and relieve pain.
  • Avoid aspirin in children under the age of 12 years.
  • Jerlum bathroom.
  • Antibiotics are not needed.
